With the opening ceremony of Indian Premier League 2018 only a few days away, competing franchises are revealing the names of their captain for the season and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) has handed the realms to wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik.

After letting Gautam Gambhir, who led the team through 2 IPL titles, go, many speculations were making rounds about the future of KKR, which were brought to halt on Saturday evening when the team announced the name of new captain and vice-captain.

Team's old server Robin Uttappa has been appointed as the vice-captain. While Uthappa has been serving KKR for a while now, Karthik has played for four different teams in the past including Royal Challengers Bangalore, Mumbai Indians, Kings XI Punjab Delhi Daredevils and Gujarat Lions.

KKR must have high hopes for the new skipper to spend Rs 7.4 crore at him in the IPL auction. Notably, Karthik has been present for the past 10 seasons on the field and played 152 IPL matches. He has scored 2903 runs at 24.81 with 14 half-centuries, 88 catches and 26 stumpings to his name.

"It is an honour to represent Kolkata Knight Riders, one of the most successful franchises in the IPL and I look forward to this new challenge. I am excited about the squad that has been assembled, which has a great combination of experience and youth," the 32-year-old expressed.

With the presence of Australian pacer Mitchell Starc and U-19 World Cup sensation Kamlesh Nagaroti in their team, KKR has a great bowling line-up but lack at the batting side. KKR will play their first IPL 2018 match against Royal Challengers Bangalore at Eden Gardens on April 8.
