Ravi Shankar Prasad Announces Rs 3,468 Crore Financial Aid For Rehabilitation Of 198 Dams

The union cabinet committee on economic affairs (CCEA) on Wednesday has approved a financial assistance of Rs 3,468 crore to improve safety and operational performance of 198 dams in the country.

Out of the total Rs 3,466 crore, Rs 2,628 crore will be funded by the world bank and Rs 747 crore will be funded by DRIP states/implementing agencies (IAs) and balance of Rs 91 crore will be funded by the Central Water Commission (CWC).

In a press release, the government said, "This dam rehabilitation project is aimed at improving the safety and operational performance and to mitigate risks to ensure the safety of downstream population and property."

"Through institutional strengthening component, the effectiveness of Dam safety organisations will be increased to take the lead to dams safe from the structural and operational point of view through capacity building of staff and officials," it added.

In the meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, CCEA has also approved construction of a new railway line between Budni to Indore and an extension of one-year for implementation of the special package under Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana–National Rural Livelihoods Mission for Jammu and Kashmir.

The new railway line of an approximate length of 205.5 Km will cost Rs 3261.82 crore to the government.
