PAN-Aadhaar Linking Deadline Extended Once Again, Now To March 2019

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) on Saturday night once again extended the deadline for the mandatory linking of the PAN (Permanent Account Number) cards with the biometric Aadhaar ID cards, marking the new deadline as March 31, 2019. The latest extension is the 5th time that the government has extended the deadline for mandatory linkage of PAN-Aadhaar cards.

The CBDT, the policy-making body of the tax department issued the order of extending the deadline under Section 119 of the Income Tax Act, stating that the extension was made after "consideration of the matter".

Previously, the CBDT had extended the deadline on March 27.

Earlier this year, the Supreme Court had ordered an extension of the March 31, 2018 deadline for linking Aadhaar cards with various other services till the five-judge constitution bench delivers its judgment on petitions challenging the validity of the Aadhaar card and the enabling law.

However, the government has made quoting of the Aadhaar card mandatory for filing income tax returns (ITRs).

According to the Section 139 AA (2) of the Income Tax Act, every person having a PAN card as of July 1, 2017 and being eligible to obtain an Aadhaar card, must convey his/her Aadhaar number to tax authorities.

As of March 2018, more than 16.65 crore PAN cards, out of the total 33 crore, have been linked with Aadhaar cards.

The earlier deadlines for linking Aadhaar cards with PAN cards were July 31, 2017, then August 31, 2017, followed by December 31, 2017, then March 31, 2018 and most recently June 30 this year (Saturday).
