The Department of Telecom (DoT) has reportedly issued instructions to all the telecom operators in India, asking them to issue to start issuing 13-digit mobile number to all Machine-to-Machine customers.

This decision doesn’t affect a Person-to-Person customer or the general 10-digit consumer. The report has worried several people who took to social media and shared their disappointment fearing that their personal mobile numbers too would be moved to thirteen digits.

A Machine-To-Machine SIM is a technology which enables devices and sensors or things to communicate with each other and with other Internet-enabled devices and systems. These sims can be used in any mobile phone.

The development was confirmed by a senior BSNL official who told media persons that the directive from DoT had come on January 8, 2018, post which the company has started working on it. Better security reason has been cited as the reason for taking this decision.
