Govt To Develop Khadi As A Global Brand, Says Suresh Prabhu

BJP government aims to promote Khadi Fabric globally as "it has an immense potential of evolving into a global brand which will help in creating more jobs in Khadi based SMEs," said Minister of Commerce and Industry, Suresh Prabhu on Friday.

"To achieve this aim, it is required to deploy in some new designs and styles in Khadi that will lead to making Khadi into a global brand," said Prabhu.

These remarks of Prabhu came in through a video message at a conclave jointly organised by FICCI (Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry), (IIFT) Indian Institute of Foreign Trade and Khadi India.

Prabhu also emphasized on district-level development to promote Khadi that will be a great boost to economic development in India.

"At least 6 districts of 5 states have been identified and taken up as the pilot project," Prabhu said.

As per reports in media, Alok Vardhan Chaturvedi, Directorate General of Foreign Trade said, “Khadi sector employs 80 lakh people and government assistance and promotions can provide a once-in-a-while push, but long-term sustainability requires inherent demand.”

“There is a huge opportunity for the Indian fashion industry in the textile sector in both domestic and the international market, and Khadi needs to create that demand,” he added.

Khadi sales grew up by 33 percent to Rs 2,005 crore in the FY 2016-17 from Rs 1,510 crore a year ago and are expected to surpass the sales mark of Rs 5,000 crore in 2018-19.
