Good News! Deadline To Link Aadhaar With PAN Card Extended To June 30

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), which is the policy-making body of the tax department, issued an order on Tuesday extending the deadline of compulsory linking of Aadhaar card with PAN cards from March 31 to June 30.

As per the order issued by the CBDT, the deadline for PAN-Aadhaar linking for filing I-T returns is being extended after "consideration of the matter".

Although the Supreme Court had earlier this month ruled that the March 31 deadline for connecting the Aadhaar biometric ID cards with various services would be extended, the apex court did not give any last date for the mandatory linkage.

The Supreme Court had ordered the extension in the last date for linkage till the 5-Judge constitution bench delivered its judgement on various petitions challenging the validity of the Aadhaar card under the Right To Privacy Act.

Quoting of the Aadhaar has been made mandatory by the government for filing income tax returns (ITRs) as well as obtaining a new PAN.

According to Section 139 AA (2) of the Income Tax Act, every person having PAN as on July 1, 2017, and who is eligible to obtain an Aadhaar ID, must intimate his Aadhaar number to the tax authorities.

As of March 5, from the total of 33 crore PAN cards, more than 16.65 crore PAN cards have been linked with Aadhaar cards.

The recent extension marks the 4th time the government has extended the deadline to link PAN and Aadhaar cards. Previously the deadline was July 31, 2017, then August 31, then December 31, then March 31, 2018 and now finally June 30.
