Debjani Ghosh, a former Intel techie has become the first woman to head a technology service company as she became the President of National Association of Software Services Companies (Nasscom), a trade organisation that represents India’s $167-billion IT services industry.

After a twenty years career with Intel Corporation, veteran Debjani Ghosh will be Nasscom's first female head in its three-decade history. Ghosh will lead the trade body that represents global leaders in software outsourcing from Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. to Infosys Ltd.

Ghosh promises to raise women's role in a work environment that is still dominated by men.

“Things have to change. We have to check talented, capable women dropping out,” said Ghosh during Nasscom’s annual conference. “Leakages are the challenge and I want to focus on how to fix that,” she added.

However, according to a 2017 Nasscom study titled “Women and IT – Scorecard,” technology companies face a significant problem of retaining women after maternity leave. Men and women starting their careers at the same age, women progress slower whereas men often seem to achieve a high-rank position at the similar level, the study found after surveying 55 companies.
