The government has once again adjusted the deadline for linking national biometric id card Aadhaar with the PAN (Permanent Account Number) and bank accounts, now announcing the deadline to be open-ended, in place of the previously announced last date of December 31, 2017.

An official notification by the Department of Revenue of the Ministry of Finance stated, "submit the Aadhaar number, and Permanent Account Number of Form No. 60,  by such date as may be notified by the Central Government."

While the deadline for linking PAN to Aadhaar was said to be extended to March 31, 2018 on December 7, the official documentation maintained December 31 as the final date.

According to the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) 2002, banks and financial institutions are required to obtain Aadhaar ID, PAN card and other official documents from a person before opening a bank account or conducting any financial transaction of Rs 50,000 or above.

The government had announced a series of deadlines for linking the biometric Aadhaar identification card with various services, including phone numbers, bank accounts, PAN cards, and other services provided by the government.

The extensive requirement for linking of services with Aadhaar cards was criticised by the public as well as politicians, with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee going as far as to say she would rather her mobile phone number be cancelled than link it with the Aadhaar.

Although the deadlines for linking government services with Aadhaar card has been extended several times, with the latest deadline being given as March 31, 2019, the last date for linking phone numbers with Aadhaar cards is fixed as February 7, 2017.

The centre cited an order passed by the Supreme Court when it approved the linking of mobile phone numbers with Aadhaar identification cards in connection with the Lokniti Foundation case on February 6 giving a window of 1 year.

"The deadline for linkage of Aadhaar with mobile phone number cannot be modified by the government unilaterally (as it is fixed by the SC)," the Centre said.
