The India Story Of French Luxury Brand Hermes

| October 14 , 2017 , 11:45 IST

At least three generations of the Hermès family have loved to travel extensively and the patterns on their scarves, garments, ties, and jewellery have reflected this passion. Hermes’s iconic marine designs and artwork that the family commissioned to artists in India and other countries around the world since 1837, continue to embellish their materials sold all over the world.

The exclusive French luxury brand had already enjoyed extensive collaborations with Indian craftsmen and its love for India and its aesthetics was strong, when its retail operations started in India ten years ago. At that time they launched their first flagship store in Mumbai. In 2008, Hermès found its home in the Oberoi Hotel in Delhi, after which the label shifted base temporarily to the DLF Emporio, and now it has a new 207 square metre store in Lutyen’s Delhi’s only luxury mall, The Chanakya.

The store is designed by French architecture agency RDAI under the leadership of Denis Montel. It is a typical Hermes style no-fuss interiors, but the iridescent metallic finishes have a distinct Indian touch inspired by the peacock. The entrance of the store flaunts the silk department, and then houses menswear, womenswear and leather goods. There is even a private room for VIP clientele and a salon for the jewellery and watch collections.

News World India is not surprised to find the celebrated Hermes equestrian saddle retailed in the store as well. This light and almost aerodynamic show-jumping saddle gears with the horse's gaits. In 1837 Thierry Hermès had started off as a harness and saddler-maker in Paris.

Hermès has a smaller presence in India than in other Asian countries such as Japan and China. Besides the Hermes Birkin bag, the rest of this brand’s luxury goods have not been as popular amongst shoppers in India. The brand philosophy and aesthetics of Hermes is sophisticated.

News World India hopes that the discerning Indian clientele warms up to this elegant brand.

We recommend a visit to Hermès, G8 – G9, The Chanakya, Yashwant Place Commercial Complex, Chanakyapuri, New Delhi. The store opened its doors to the public on October 5.
