This year’s India story at the New York Fashion Week was about lesser-known Indian designers besides those having a strong Indian-American connection.

Indian designer Prarthana made her debut on the New York Fashion Week with her brand Kovet. She showcased her Spring Summer 2018 collection titled Unabridged that included clothes for a range of occasions - resort wear, brunch wear, red carpet wear and power dressing. Sticking to typical feminine, long, elegant silhouettes, Prarthana’s clothes were graceful even if they barely stood out.

Little known designer from Gurgaon Shivani Jain also showed at NYFW. Her black, white, blue and beige cocktail gowns and breezy silhouettes were part of her collection titled Moonlight.

The Indian-American fashion designer Naeem Khan lined up ornate, sequinned, and intricately detailed gowns.

New York based Bibhu Mohapatra is a regular at the NYFW. This time around he displayed a set of affordable separates called Sashi.

Besides the influence from India, there was also the 75-year-old Indian jewellery brand Narayan Jewellers at NYFW. Narayan Jewellers by Ketan and Jatin Choskhi dazzled during Bibhu Mohapatra’s show.

In the past half-decade or so, the domestic fashion weeks in Delhi and Mumbai have gained great traction. They have offered a platform to the fledgling Indian luxury fashion industry to approach the growing Indian market, thus making international fashion weeks or indeed the international market less attractive.
