Volkswagen Introduces New Smaller 1.0-Litre Petrol Engine Polo In India

European car manufacturer Volkswagen on Friday launched a new 1.0-Litre Petrol engine Polo in India, making the car smaller and replacing the existing 1.2-litre engine. The company reportedly claimed that the smaller engine enhances the fuel efficiency of the car without any compromise on power or performance.

The new 1.0-litre unit is lighter by 18kg and comes mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox.

Commenting on the introduction of the new engine, Steffen Knapp, Director of Volkswagen Passenger Cars India said, "Delivering on our promise of continued product introduction and innovation, we are pleased to introduce the Polo in an all-new 1.0 L MPI engine. We are known for our performance and unmatched safety and with this new introduction; we further enhance our brand proposition, providing a diverse portfolio to India's distinctive car-buyer, with multiple engine options that best suit their requirements."

Where the older 1.2-litre MPI petrol returned 16.47 kmpl according to ARAI test results, the new smaller 1-litre MPI petrol engine offers 18.78 kmpl. It offers the same horsepower figure of 75 bhp @ 6,200rpm.
Torque figures for the 1.0-litre engine, however, have come down to 95 Nm as compared to 110 Nm in the older 1.2-litre engine.

Prices for the new Volkswagen Polo remains the same at Rs 5.41 lakh (ex-showroom).

The Polo was first launched in India in 2010.
