One of US President Donald Trump's longest-serving and most trusted aides, White House Communications Director Hope Hicks is resigning from her position, media reported on Thursday.

The 29-year-old Hicks was once an aide to Trump's daughter Ivanka Trump and despite having no previous experience in politics, was one of the first people Donald Trump hired for his 2016 election campaign, in which she was the spokeswoman.

The White House announced that Hicks, 29, was leaving a day after she spent nine hours in a closed hearing of the House of Representatives Intelligence Committee on its investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 U.S. presidential election. White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders clarified that the decision of Hicks to resign from the White House was not connected with the hearing.

In an official statement, Hicks said, “there are no words to adequately express my gratitude to President Trump. I wish the president and his administration the very best as he continues to lead our country.”

US President Trump, in a statement released by the White House, said, “Hope is outstanding and has done great work for the last three years. She is as smart and thoughtful as they come, a truly great person.”

He added, “I will miss having her by my side but when she approached me about pursuing other opportunities, I totally understood. I am sure we will work together again in the future.”

Since Trump becoming US President in January 2017, there has been an extraordinary amount of turnover among White House senior staff. Reince Priebus, Trump's first chief of staff stepped down last summer and Trump's chief strategist Steve Bannon was fired. A total of 4 people, including Hicks and former press secretary Sean Spicer have held the position of communications director mantle.

The exact date of departure of Hicks from the White House is unconfirmed but likely to take place over the next few weeks.
