Who Will Be The Next Prime Minister Of Pakistan? Here's The List Of Probables

Who stands next in line for the Prime Minister’s position as Nawaz resigned from the office following the Supreme Court disqualifying him from the public office over Panama papers case?

Citing the report by the formal panel investigating the Prime Minister’s family, the Supreme Court of Pakistan unanimously disqualified Nawaz Sharif from ever holding the public office ever again.

The investigation panel had found the wealth of Nawaz’s family much more than they could account for, even more than accounted in the Panama Papers.

As the Supreme Court’s verdict took place with the Prime Minister’s resignation. Politics is on the rise in Pakistan as to who will hold the office after him.

Here are some names on top of the ‘next in line’ list

Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan

Leading the line is PML (N) leader Nisar Ali Khan, who is also the current Interior Minister under Nawaz Sharif government.

Nisar has also held the ‘Senior Minister’ position, equivalent to the Deputy Prime Minister position. He has close relations with Nawaz Sharif as well as the Pakistani military. He has also served as a broker between the two in cases of disagreements.

Shahbaz Sharif

Nawaz Sharif’s brother, Shahbaz Sharif, who is also the Chief Minister of Punjab is also a major player in the race for the Prime Ministerial seat considering his prominence and that he might get Nawaz’s recommendation.

PML-(N) leader, Shahbaz Sharif is currently the Chief Minister of Punjab and has also held the position before from 1997 to 1999. As he is not a Member of the Parliament, if chosen as Nawaz’s successor, he would have to contest the elections before he can get his hands on the Prime Minister’s position.

Khawaja Asif

According to Geo News, Khawaja Asif is most likely to take over the position of Interim Prime Minister for the first 45 days until the Pakistan Muslim League (N) chooses Sharif’s successor.

PML (N) leader Khawaja Asif is currently the Defence Minister of Pakistan and five times elected Member of the Pakistani Parliament. He was also a member of Pakistan’s legislative assembly and has also held the position of petroleum and natural resources minister.

Sardar Ayaz Sadiq

Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, currently the speaker of the national assembly of Pakistan, is also a strong contender for the Prime Minister’s position.

He has close ties to the Prime Minister and is very popular in the party. He rose to prominence after beating cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan, PML (N)’s strongest rival in the General elections of 2013 and has been a close ally and advisor to the Prime Minister ever since.
