Plane Crashes At Jose Marti International Airport In Cuba Killing More Than 100 People

A Cubana de Aviacion Boeing 737-200 plane crashed after takeoff at the Jose Marti International Airport in Havana, Cuba killing more than 100 people on Friday.

The plane was carrying 105 passengers including one infant. Three female passengers survived the crash but are in critical condition as per local media reports. The plane was headed for Holguin city in eastern Cuba but it crashed after take-off in an agricultural area in the Santiago de Las Vegas area of the Cuban capital.

Among the passengers, 100 were Cuban nationals while 5 were foreigners as per the Deputy Minister of Transportation Eduardo Rodriguez Davila.  The crew members on board were Mexican nationals as per the Civil Aviation Authority of Mexico.

"During take-off (the plane) apparently suffered a problem and dived to the ground," the Mexican transport department posted on its website.

Cuban State TV has announced two days of national mourning, during which flags will fly at half-staff.

President of Cuba Miguel Diaz-Canel visited the crash site. He said, “There has been an unfortunate aviation accident. The news is not very promising, it seems that there is a high number of victims."

Boeing issued a statement after the crash and said it was ready to send a technical team to Cuba, "as permitted under US law and at the direction of the US National Transportation Safety Board and Cuban authorities".
