The Nobel Prize in Literature 2018 has been delayed for 1 year and will now be presented along with the winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature 2019, the awarding authority the Swedish Academy said in a statement on Friday.

According to reports, the award has been delayed due to the sex scandal that wracked the Swedish Academy in Sweden's own #MeToo movement. However, the statement issued by the Swedish Academy, says that the decision was taken "in view of the currently diminished Academy and the reduced public confidence in the Academy."

While the Swedish Academy said that the work on the selection of a laureate is already in advanced stages, it said that "the Academy needs time to regain its full complement, engage a larger number of active members and regain confidence in its work, before the next Literature Prize winner is declared."

The Academy's permanent secretary, Anders Olsson said, "We find it necessary to commit time to recovering public confidence in the academy before the next laureate can be announced, out of respect for previous and future literature laureates, the Nobel Foundation and the general public."

The crisis took place after a string of allegations of sexual assault and harassment were made against French photographer Jean-Claude Arnault, a leading cultural figure in Sweden and the husband of Academy member  Katarina Frostenson. In the wake of the scandal, Frostenson stepped down from the Academy as did 6 others, leaving only 10 active members in the group.

The Nobel committee welcomed Swedish Academy's announcement, and added that the crisis does not impact the 2018 Nobel Prizes in other categories.

"The crisis in the Swedish Academy has adversely affected the Nobel Prize. Their decision underscores the seriousness of the situation and will help safeguard the long-term reputation of the Nobel Prize. None of this impacts the awarding of the 2018 Nobel Prizes in other prize categories," it said in a statement.
