Nobel Prize 2017: Award Season Opens With Prize For Medicine

The father of all literary honours, the Nobel Prize has finally made its presence known in 2017. The awards open on Monday with the announcement of the winner for medicine. As every year, this year also many speculations regarding the worthy winners were making rounds.

The committee at the Karolinska Institute is expected to make the announcement for selected laureates on October 2. As per Sweden's newspaper, American oncologist Dennis Slamon is likely to be honoured for his breast cancer and the drug treatment Herceptin research.

The winner of Lasker Prize 2015 and pioneer in the field of immunotherapy that battles tumour cells, James Allison along with Arlene Sharpe and Gordon Freeman are also expected to claim the honour.

The recipients of Lasker Prize 2016, Ralf Bartenschlager, Americans Charles Rice and Michael Sofia who worked on a cure for Hepatitis C are also strong contenders for the prize.

Following the medicine prize, the physics prize will be announced on Tuesday, the chemistry prize on Wednesday, the Nobel Peace Prize on October 6 whereas the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel is expected to be announced on October 9.

Last year, Academy's choice of US singer-songwriter, Bob Dylan raised many eyebrows due to which Stockholm's literary circles have assumed that there will be more conservative names in the list this year.
