At least 9 people have been killed and 35 injured when suicide bombers disguised as churchgoers blasted themselves in 3 churches in Indonesia's second largest city of Surabaya on Sunday. No group has claimed responsibility for the attacks.

The first attack took place at the Santa Maria Roman Catholic Church, during Sunday Mass, killing 4 people including the suspected bomber, and injuring many others including 2 police officers, police spokesman Frans Barung Mangera said to Reuters.

The second explosion took place barely minutes later at the Christian Church of Diponegoro, killing 2 people. The third attack occurred at the city's Pantekosta Church, during which another 2 people died.

One of the injured died in the hospital, bringing the total death toll to 9.

"Right now there are only three locations. Do not believe in misleading information that (the bomb) exploded in five locations or any others," the police spokesman added.

Meanwhile, the police has ordered a temporary closure of all churches in Surabaya and a large food festival in the city has also been cancelled.

The latest attacks on churches in Indonesia, which has a predominantly Muslim population, come days after the policed ended a riot and hostage-taking situation at a detention centre near Jakarta that resulted in the death of 6 officers and 3 inmates, for which the Islamic State militant group claimed responsibility.

Although Indonesia has been acting against militant activity by al=Qaida affiliated radicals, the Islamic State has been increasing its presence in the nation.
