A Bank of America ATM in Texas state dispensed a lot more than cash and receipts, it was also dispensing handwritten notes with the message 'please help'.

While initially customers were confused and thought it must be a joke, police officers were soon called into the ATM in Corpus Christi town of Texas.

The responding officers also thought the 'help' messages coming from the ATM were a joke, however soon they heard a faint voice coming from the machine.

"Sure enough, we can hear a little voice coming from the machine," Corpus Christi police officer Richard Olden said to the local Fox affiliate.

The door of the ATM was kicked down, and sure enough, there was a man behind the machine who was trapped there! The man had entered the service room exactly behind the ATM so when he was trapped, he resorted to sending handwritten messages through the machine itself.

According to reports, the man was a contractor who was there to repair a door lock but accidentally left behind his phone and the device to unlock the door, so he was stranded. Since there was no simple way to open the door from the inside he could not escape and since he had no phone he could not call for help.

The repairman wrote several pleas for help and one accessed by media said "Please help. I'm stuck in here, and I don't have my phone. Please call my boss," with the number written below.

Due to the unusual situation, police couldn't classify the incident as a crime, so they freed the man and let him go.

Officers said that they believed the man was trapped there for two hours.
