Islamic State (ISIS) militant group recently claimed responsibility for the terrorist attack on Barcelona in Spain on August 17 which resulted in the death of 13 people, but ISIS continues to lose land on its home turf in Iraq as the government launches military offensives against it, retaking land from the militant group.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi on Sunday announced the launch of a military offensive to recover the Tal Afar city from the control of ISIS during a public televised address.

Dressed in a black military uniform Abadi stood in front of an Iraqi flag and a map of the country, and announced that the operation to free Tel Afar had started. Addressing the militants, Abadi said they have no option but to "surrender or die" and ended the speech with an address to Iraqi troops, saying "The whole world is with you".

Hours before the making the announcement, the Iraqi air force had dropped leaflets over the city warning people to "prepare" for the latest assault.

"The battle is imminent and the victory is coming, God willing," read the leaflets.

Located on a major road between Mosul and the Syrian border, Tal Afar fell to the ISIS in 2014 and was once a key supply route for the militant group. With a mostly Shia-Muslim population, Tal Afar is surrounded by government troops and Shia militiamen in the south, and Kurdish Peshmerga fighters in the north.
