At least 18 people have been killed when a suicide car bomber being pursued by security forces blew himself up in eastern Damascus on Sunday.

According to reports, security forces intercepted three car bombers on their way into the city on Sunday morning when two of the vehicles were blown up on the outskirts of the city while the third reached the eastern Tahrir Square district.

An interior ministry statement said that the driver of the third vehicle blew himself up while being pursued, "killing a number of civilians, injuring others, and causing material damage to public and private properties."

From the 18 fatalities, at least 7 are members of pro-regime security forces and 2 are civilians, while the remaining are yet to be identified.

Throughout the 6-year conflict within Syria and the assaults by the Islamic State militant group, Damascus, which remains under government control, has been largely untouched although dozens of people have died on the outskirts of the capital.
