Independence Day is celebrated with great aplomb across the nation, however in the Kashmir valley restrictions were imposed in several areas to maintain law and order after separatists had called for a strike. Regardless of the shutdown, official functions celebrating Independence Day such as flag hoisting, parades, and cultural programmes were held peacefully across the Valley.

One Kashmiri Pandit woman did not let the restrictions or protests stop her from sharing her patriotic pride for the nation. Although educational institutes, government offices, post offices, and markets were closed, standing alone on an empty street in Srinagar's Lal Chowk, the woman chanted 'Bharat mata ki jai'. Her patriotism was recorded and the video has since then gone viral.

Many people shared the woman's video, including famous cricketer Suresh Raina, hailing the woman for her bravery.
