On World Press Freedom Day, Know Directly From Journalists Why They Joined Media

May 3rd was declared as World Press Freedom Fay or World Press Day by the United Nations General Assembly to raise awareness of the importance of freedom of press and remind governments of their duty to uphold the freedom of expression.

The freedom of expression was enshrined as a human right under the Article 19 of the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Media is considered to be democracy's fourth pillar as free and independent journalism reinforces democracy, justice and the rule of law.

The theme of World Press Day 2018 has been announced by UN as 'Keeping Power in Check: Media, Justice and The Rule of Law'. The theme of 2018 highlights the importance of an enabling legal environment for press freedom and prosecution of crimes against journalists.

Journalism is considered to be a dangerous profession as well, with more than 2,500 journalists having been killed since 1990.
