The eagerly awaited Supreme Court verdict on the criminalisation of homosexuality as put forth in Section 377 of the IPC regarding 'unnatural' sex was delivered on Thursday and as the apex court struck down the controversial Section 377, the nation celebrated as one.
The Supreme Court five-judge constitutional bench headed by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra and comprising of Justice Rohinton Nariman, Justice AM Khanwilkar, Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice Indu Malhotra said, "Respect for individual choice essence of liberty, LGBT community possess equal rights under the Constitution, Supreme Court."
“Sexual orientation of an individual is natural and discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation is a violation of Freedom of Expression,” the bench added.
For LGBT community members, the decriminalisation of homosexuality is a landmark verdict which will protect them from persecution and allow them to express themselves freely.
Apart from members of the LGBT (Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transexual) community, celebrities, politicians and the general public also joined in to welcome the verdict.
