UP police have filed an FIR and launched a manhunt for 3 men who mercilessly beat up a Dalit youth in Muzaffarnagar in Western UP, kicking and hurling abuses at him, forcing the youth to chant 'Jai Mata Di', claiming that he had insulted gods.

The entire incident was caught on tape by a fourth assailant and the video clip on Sunday went viral on social media, leading the police to lodge the FIR. Police were able to identify the youth as a 27-year-old Dalit resident of Muzaffarnagar.

Senior Superintendent of Police Anant Deo said that the accused have been identified as 3-4 Gujjar residents of the area.

“We are speaking to the victim and his family members and the accused have been identified as three-four Gujjar residents of the area. The incident took place in the Purkazi police station area,” the SSP said.

An FIR has been registered under IPC sections 307 (attempt to murder), 295A (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs) and sections of the SC/ST Act and IT Act, police said.

The video clip that was shot on Sunday showed a man wearing a black helmet and lying on the ground while he was being beaten and kicked by at least 3 men. The victim's hands are folded as his helmet is pulled out and the 3 men assault him and order him to repeat chants like chants like ‘Jai Mata Di’.

One of the attackers tells the Dalit youth, “We don’t criticise your Ambedkar, do we? Why did you do it to ours?”
