The Unique Identification Authority of India today announced ‘facial authentication’ as an additional security feature for Aadhaar verification. As per UIDAI CEO Dr. Ajay Bhushan Pandey, the Aadhaar Face authorization will help all elderly or others facing issues with fingerprint authentication. Service to be launched by 1 July 2018.

A circular issued by UIDAI reads, “Face authentication shall be allowed ONLY in fusion mode along with one more authentication factor. This means face authentication must be combined with either fingerprint, or iris or OTP to be successfully authenticate an Aadhaar number holder.”

Union Minister for Electronics & IT and Law & Justice, Ravi Shankar Prasad’s office tweeted “In yet another innovative solution to facilitate digital inclusion @UIDAI introduces face authentication for those who are facing problems in finger print authentications.”

Former Chairman of UIDAI, Nandan Nilekani tweeted “Authentication via facial photo matching builds on the principle of inclusion and delivers on the promise of evolving with the times!”

The latest announcement has received flak from several people who have been questioning and pointing out the fallacies in Aadhaar.
