What exactly is Ransomware?

Ransomware is the newest threat on the internet which might attack your personal computer without you even knowing it. It is a form of malicious software that locks up the files on your computer, encrypts them and demands that you pay to get your files back by using bit coin.

Microsoft Windows operating system has been hit so far with a type of ransomware virus which is called  WannaDecryptor or Wanna cry. When a system is infected, a pop up window appears, prompting you to pay to recover all your files within three days, with a countdown timer on the left of the window. If you are unable to pay within that time then the fee will be doubled and if you don't pay within seven days, you will lose those files forever.

Where has it spread?

British based cyber researcher Chris Doman of AlienVault said that Ransomware is attacking a lot of countries with at least two dozen countries having been infected so far. The broad based Ransomware attack has affected at least eight Asian countries, twelve countries in Europe, Turkey, UAE and Argentina and is spreading across the globe.

How can you prevent it?

The best way to prevent this is by creating backup of your files. The malware only attacks the files that exist in your computer. If you keep backing up your computer then most likely you will be able to protect your data even if your computer is attacked by this virus.

According to Microsoft's Malware Protection Centre, other precautions include that you keep updating your antivirus program and make sure pop up's are blocked. Also, try to make sure that your smart screen is turned on.
