PV Sindhu was knocked out of the first round of All England Championships on Wednesday after a 16-21, 22-20, 18-21 loss to South Korea's Sung Ji Hyun in Birmingham.

This was Sindhu's second straight loss to Sung Ji, with her previous loss coming in Hong Kong Open last year.

Sindhu started the match well-leading 6-3 over Sung Ji, however, she looked nervous and anxious and the South Korean made the best of it. Sindhu was pushing everything at the net to the back of the court and Sung Ji used that to her advantage to set herself up for points. Sung Ji went into the break with an 11-8 lead.

Sindhu fought back hard after the break trying to take more control of the net but mistakes in around-the-head situations and straight drop shots meant Sung Ji stayed on top.

Sung Ji played some good shots and also defended well and took the first game 21-16 comfortably.

Sung Ji Hyun brought up three match point opportunities for herself in the second game only for Sindhu to save them all and take the game 22-20.

Sung Ji Hyun once again came up trumps to bring up match points 20-13 but Sindhu once again got the nerves going only for Sung Ji to seal it in her 9th match point opportunity.

Sung Ji defeated Sindhu twice in three meetings last year and if the Indian can put it past the Korean, she will run into either Russian Evgeniya Kosetskaya or Hong Kong's Cheung Ngan Yi in the second round.
