Lionel Messi Wins His Fifth European Golden Shoe

Football star Lionel Messi has won his fifth European Gold Shoe after scoring 34 goals in the La Liga season propelling Barcelona to a 25th league triumph.

Messi came off the bench late on as Barcelona ended their victorious league campaign by beating Real Sociedad 1-0 at the Nou Camp. 

Messi has won the European Gold Shoe in 2010, 2012, 2013 and 2017. He topped the charts ahead of Mohammad Salah who has scored 32 goals in his debut season for the Liverpool. Harry Kane, the top player of Tottenham was placed at third position after scoring 30 goals in the premier league despite suffering an ankle injury.

Italian Footballer and Lazio striker Ciro Immobile, Inter Milan’s Mauro Icardi and Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski were tied together for the fourth place with 29 goals each.

Real Madrid’s star Cristiano Ronaldo with his 26 goals was placed ninth in the ranking. Ronaldo has won the European Gold Shoe four times.

The Golden Shoe award is given based on a points system that allows players in stronger domestic leagues to win even if they score fewer goals than a player in a weaker league.
