The Kolkata police on Thursday filed a chargesheet against India pacer Mohammed Shami under Section 498A (dowry harassment) and 354A (sexual harassment). They submitted the documents before the Alipore police court.
Shami's wife Hasin Jahan had filed a petition with the Alipore court mentioning domestic violence and demanded Rs 7 lakh per month from him to maintain the family. The court accepted her plea and Rs 80,000 was allocated for her daughter.
Reportedly a police officer confirmed, “Shami has been charged under section 498A (torture for dowry). His brother Hasib Ahmad has been charged under section 498A and 354A (Sexual harassment).”
With the ICC World Cup 2019 approaching, the chargesheet comes as a major blow for the premier India pacer.
Hasin Jahan told Sports Tak, "I had thought that I am a Bengali and I will definitely get justice and today that day has come. My faith has been fulfilled today even though there are only two sections levied against him in the charge sheet, there had to be more on the basis of the evidence that I had submitted. On the basis of that, the charge sheet should have been stronger.”
Hasin told TOI that she was not in contact with Shami anymore. "I am still struggling with my own career. It's also time to get my daughter admitted to a good school. But it's my belief that the truth will prevail."
Her lawyer Anirban Guha Thakurta said they would look into the chargesheet. "We will study the charge sheet. We need to know why the more severe sections were dropped," he said.
Kolkata police had registered an FIR against Shami on March 8 last year following his wife’s complaint. Jahan had also met Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee at the state assembly premises and handed her an appeal.
Shami and Jahan were married on April 7, 2014, about two years after they met at a Kolkata Knight Riders party.
