India's Bajrang Punia Becomes World No.1 Wrestler In 65 Kg Category

Indian ace wrestler and Asian Games gold medallist Bajrang Punia on Saturday became the world's no. 1 in the 65kg category, according to the ranking chart released by the United World Wrestling (UWW).

Bajrang Punia had a wonderful year as he managed to win 5 medals this season which includes Common Wealth Games and Asian Games gold and a silver at the World Championship and as a result of that he managed to top the table with 96 points.

Speaking to media Punia said in a statement, "I am happy about the ranking because it reflects India's overall growth in wrestling. But the real celebration for me will be when I become the Olympic champion."

"But I am working hard and will try to retain this world number rank with a World Championship gold next year," he added.

The Indian is way ahead of Russia's Akhmed Chakaev and Takuto, who are ranked second and third respectively. The Russian, who lost to the Japanese in the semi-finals of the World Championships, has 66 points. He has managed to push the Japanese, who has a total of 62 points, to the third spot.

Interestingly, Bajrang is the lone male Indian to list in top-10 but India has five female wrestlers who are in the top-10 bracket in their respective categories. Pooja Dhanda, who became only the fourth Indian woman to win a World Championship medal, is now ranked sixth in the women's 57kg with 52 points. She had taken a bronze.

Ritu Phogat completes the top-10 in the women's 50kg, with 33 points. Sarita Mor is ranked seventh in 59kg with 29 points while Navjot Kaur (32) and Kiran (37) are ninth in 68kg and 76kg category respectively.
