GROUP H ---- JAPAN, POLAND, COLOMBIA AND SENEGAL

Group H was rated the second easiest group before the world cup by the experts. But is it really so?

Group H consisting Japan, Senegal, Colombia and Poland was considered to be one of the easiest of the eight. But that may not be the case. Here is an analysis that may prove otherwise:

JAPAN – RANK 61 (WORST RANK)

SENEGAL – RANK 27(SECOND WORST RANK)

COLOMBIA- RANK 16(SECOND BEST RANK)

POLAND- RANK 8(BEST RANK)

As it can be seen, the two worst teams as per the rankings are on the top after the 1st round. If calculated, Japan and Senegal need to win only one of their remaining two group match to qualify, whereas Poland and Colombia need to at least win one match each in order to remain in the race.

If the match between Poland and Senegal produces a result, then the losing team will be out of the qualification race. But if the match between Japan and Senegal produces a result then the winning team will qualify for the pre-quarters.

This clearly tells that the way for top two ranked teams of the group is not going to be easy. They have to win all their matches and expect that Japan and Senegal draw match between them and lose their other matches. Also, they will have to improve their goal difference.

This also proves that the stats are not the things that define the results. This also shows that rankings cannot define the results. What is needed is hard work and improvement. Group H was said the second easiest group by the experts due to its average ranking of 28. But after the first round, it is clear that the competition in this group is the most difficult.

Maybe Colombia was adversely affected because Carlos Sanchez was given early red card which weakened their lineup. But it cannot be ignored that due to this fact that Colombia is sitting at the bottom of the table. What can motivate Colombia and Poland is that only a few teams in top 20 have been able to win their first match. Even teams like Argentina, Portugal and former world champions Germany were not able to win their first match.

But they will have to be careful from Japan and Senegal who would be high on the confidence after winning their first match. Japan would be extremely motivated by the fact that they defeated Colombia and became the first ever Asian team to defeat a South American football nation. Senegal also became the first African team to win a match in this world cup which will inspire them to win further and make whole Africa proud. In 2002, Senegal had impressed football fans across the globe by defeating defending champions France in the World cup opener.

All four teams have something to take inspiration from. It will be interesting to see which team can make their efforts count and qualify for the world cup pre-quarterfinals.

James Rodriguez and Robert Lewandowski would need to deliver for Colombia and Poland respectively if these teams want to qualify. They can learn from their mistakes and perform better.

This is going to be a mouthwatering contest. As football fans let us hope that the best teams make it to the pre-quarters.
