World Football's governing body, FIFA on Friday threatened the Spanish federation (RFEF) of suspension from the 2018 Russia World Cup due to their political interference. However, the Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has refused to have received any such letter from the federation.

The issue raised after the resignation of Angel Maria Villar RFEF president post being arrested in July on suspicion of embezzling funds. Maria was replaced by Juan Luis Larrea who would see out the former's term till 2020, which received an objection from the Spanish National Sports Agency (CSD).

FIFA stated, " We can confirm that FIFA recently sent a letter to the Spanish FA (RFEF) expressing its concern at the current situation in the association and reiterating that, under the FIFA Statutes, all member associations must manage their affairs independently and ensure that there is no interference by third parties in internal matters."

The official statement continued, "FIFA is in contact with the RFEF, and a joint FIFA-UEFA delegation will be sent to Madrid shortly to monitor and assess the situation in the association."

The Spanish government and RFEF are convinced that their national team will go into the World Cup and come back victoriously. During a press conference in Brussels, Rajoy said, "I am absolutely convinced Spain will go to the World Cup and will win."

He further confirmed that the State Minister of Spain has received a letter from FIFA "requesting a meeting" while calling his government's attitude "exemplary". Villar was serving his eighth term when he got arrested on suspicion of creating a network of corruption in Spanish football.
