Chris Gayle, the swashbuckling West Indies batsman added another record to his T20 career on Monday when he became the fastest batsman to score 4000 runs in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Gayle reached the landmark with a single against the Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur. He also broke the record of Sunrisers Hyderabad's batsman David Warner, who achieved the milestone in 114 innings, while Gayle got to the mark in his 112th inning.
Gayle became the ninth batsman and the second overseas player to reach to the milestone. He joined the club that consists of the likes of Suresh Raina, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Warner, Robin Uthappa, Gambhir, Shikhar Dhawan and Dhoni.
Rajasthan Royals skipper Ajinkya Rahane won the toss and elected to bowl against Kings XI Punjab in their first match of the Indian Premier League. Steve Smith, who missed the last season due to the ball-tampering row, is making his comeback to the IPL in this match.
The batsman wasn’t going well around 2011 and failed to attract a bid in the IPL auction. The mid-season signing by the Royal Challengers Bangalore gave the Caribbean batsman a second chance. He never looked back from there with redefined consistency and power-hitting not only in the IPL but also in the Twenty20 format.
