The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has recommended the names of Harmanpreet Kaur and Cheteshwar Pujara to the sports ministry for Arjuna Award. Amid speculations of recommending Mithali Raj’s name, for the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, for leading the Indian women Cricket team, to the finals of the ICC world cup, the board has failed to recommend the skipper.

Though not the favourite to win the world cup, the team under the leadership of Mithali Raj performed like champions to reach the final against the host, England. Losing to the host team by a margin of 9 runs, the Indian side witnessed many spectacular performers during the tour. Listing among top notch contributors in contemporary Indian women cricket has been the captain, Mithali Raj, who also holds the record of amassing the highest number of ODI runs (6,190 runs) in overall women cricket history.

While Harmanpreet Kaur deserves a place in the award list for her spectacular performance in the world cup, most cricket lovers are of the opinion that the captain too disserves a place in the list for her contribution in leadership and in the game. Harmanpreet Kaur scored a crucial 171- not out, against Australia during the world cup semi-finals to lead the team into the Final against host England. Mithali Raj, on the other hand, scored 109 runs and stood against the attacking New Zealand balling in the do or die match that took India into the semi-finals.

However, there is still chance for the board to send names as late entry for genuine cases. Other recommendations to the ministry are – Former Team India hockey captain Sardar Singh, Boxer Manoj Kumar and four other Paralympic Medalists – Deepa Malik, Devendra JhaJharia, Mariappan Thangavelu and Varun Singh Bhati.
