First seed Rafael Nadal was knocked out of 2018 Australian Open due to the resurgence of his hip injury in the fifth set of the quarter-final. His injury proved to be beneficial for Marin Cilic who received an easy entry into the semi-finals by 3-6, 6-3, 6-7, 6-2, 2-0.

Rafa has reportedly suffered a leg injury during training which troubled him throughout the match whereas Cilic, knowingly, maintained a tough face. After winning the third round, the Spanish player lost balance in the next and soon asked for a medical timeout.

World number one was visibly grimacing in pain while his trainer Per Bastholt worked on his upper right leg and hip area. Despite trying to hide the physical suffering, Rafael's limping between the points after fourth round gave him away and Cilic's powerful groundstrokes didn't help either.

After a short break, Rafa was back on the court with restricted movements. In the next two games, Marin hit a forehand passing shot and broke his serve. Losing two games and his struggle to score prompted the Spanish player to announce his retirement to the umpire.

The sixth Croatian seed appreciated Nadal's game and expressed sympathy over his unbelievable ouster. "He’s an unbelievable competitor and always give his best. It’s very unfortunate for him to finish this way," he said.

Notably, all the big names but Roger Federer have been knocked out the glam slam tournament. The Swiss professional will play Tomas Berdych in the quarterfinals on Wednesday whereas Marin Cilic will face British number two Kyle Edmund in the semi-finals.
