The virus which crippled computers around the world, even in governmental agencies, would lock computers and unlock the affected computers only after the user paid ransom of $300.

According to reports, Hutchins has been arrested on charges of "having created, maintained and marketed the Kronos banking Trojan from July 2014 to July 2015". Hutchins was arrested while he was attending a hackers' conference in Las Vegas. His supporters claim that he was falsely arrested and that the expert hacker was more likely coming up with a solution to Kronos.

A defender of Hutchins said, "law enforcement may have misinterpreted actions Hutchins took to find a way to protect against Kronos".
