Mobile phones are going to get more expensive from 2018 as the Department of Telecommunications has announced that every phone must have GPS from 1st January 2018.

The Telecommunications department has taken this step as they feel that this will help them in tracking people which will help in improving security, especially for women as this will help them when they are in trouble.

“GPS is the main tool regarding location details of the subscriber in an emergency, so the government has decided to implement it in all the mobile phone handsets from 1 January 2018 in a positive manner,” the DoT has said in a reply to industry body Indian Cellular Association (ICA).

The mobile phone manufacturers are not very happy with this as the say that the move will increase the cost of feature devices by at least 30 percent.

Feature phones are basic phones which are available in the market at a price band of around Rs 500 to Rs 1,500. Post the move, manufacturers expect the cost of the devices to escalate at least by Rs 400, which companies will have to pass on to the customer.

DoT has said that the method used for locating caller with help of mobile towers is not very accurate. It said that the GPS has been mandated in all mobile handsets “to ensure the safety and security of women which is of utmost importance”.
