In the day and age of busy lives on the go, dating apps such as Tinder have become a huge success, however, they generally focus on short-term relations. In contrast, Facebook is launching a dating feature for real long-term relationships, CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced during the keynote address at Facebook's annual F8 developer conference on Tuesday.

"This is going to be for building real, long-term relationships — not just hook-ups," Zuckerberg said.

The dating feature would likely be a free service and Facebook users would be able to build a dating profile that would be hidden from their friends. The feature would then match users specifically with people they aren't already friends with based on common interests, mutual friends and dating preferences.

"We have designed this with privacy and safety in mind from the beginning. Your friends aren't going to see your profile, and you're only going to be suggested to people who are not your friends," Zuckerberg said.

"It mirrors the way people actually date, which is usually at events and institutions that they're connected to," chief product officer Chris Cox said during the F8 conference.

The announcement of a new dating feature for Facebook was followed by the shares of online dating company falling by 22 percent.

Match CEO Mandy Ginsberg in a statement to CNBC said they were "flattered" Facebook was entering the space.

"We're surprised at the timing given the amount of personal and sensitive data that comes with this territory. Regardless, we're going to continue to delight our users through product innovation and relentless focus on relationship success. We understand this category better than anyone," Ginsberg said.
