Researchers in the US working at the prestigious University Of Washington have invented the phone that can be used without a battery. You must be thinking how is that even possible.

Well, according to the researchers at the University Of Washington the phone can get the power from either ambient radio signals or light and requires no batteries.

Lead author Vamsi Talla told media that, although the prototype doesn't work exactly like a standard phone, there are a lot of possibilities from a battery-free phone.

This battery-free technology could be useful in places where getting an electrical charge is difficult, he said and could create a phone that lasts longer because it's not dependent on the shelf life of the battery.

The main benefit would be the ability to make a phone call even if a cellphone's battery is low or even has zero power, Talla said.

"We've built what we believe is the first functioning cell phone that consumes almost zero power," said co-author Shyam Gollakota, an associate professor in the Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering at the UW.

"To achieve the really, really low power consumption that you need to run a phone by harvesting energy from the environment, we had to fundamentally rethink how these devices are designed."

However, the phone does require a small amount of energy to perform some operations. The prototype has a power budget of 3.5 microwatts.
