A name synonymous with 'dolls' for children as well as adults across the world, 'Barbie' made its debut as a toy doll for the first time at the American International Toy Fair in New York on March 9, 1959, a day which is used as Barbie's official birthday.

The Barbie doll was created by American businesswoman Ruth Handler who watched her daughter Barbara play with paper dolls, often giving them adult roles in a time when most toy dolls were made in the shape of children. Ruth came up with an idea of adult toy dolls, and used German toy doll 'Bild Lilli' as an inspiration to design adult dolls which she named after her daughter as 'Barbie'.

Fast-forward 26 years later, Ukrainian Valeria ‘Valeryevna’ Lukyanova was born in 1989 in Moldova, then one of the republics of the USSR. By then, Barbie dolls had become the staple toy for girls everywhere, fondly lugged around and dressed up by children of all ages. Valeria took her fondness for Barbie dolls in another direction, by becoming one herself!

Getting breast implants, maintain a strict diet, wearing contact lenses and using make-up Valeria became an internet sensation for her striking resemblance to Barbie dolls, and is often dubbed as “real-life Barbie doll” or “Human Barbie”.

In Valeria's photoshoots, she attempts to emphasise the resemblance even more, often dressing in Barbie-doll inspired fashion.
