The Lakme Fashion Week 2019 kickstarted last night which took place at the Royal Opera House in Mumbai and it promised a gala when we saw B-town filmmaker turn fashionista Karan Johar and the ever so beautiful Tabu strut in style.
The duo turned showstoppers for avant-garde fashion designer Gaurav Gupta and it was a treat for sore eyes.
Titled, The (Un)folding, the collection was dominated by Gaurav's signature gravity-defying pattern making and the designer also brought that element to the show through collaboration with his close friend, poetess Navkirat Sodhi.
Sodhi introduced the show with spoken prose, illustrating the designer's creative spirit as he embarks on his 15th year in the industry this year. She recited "Kill Pain With Couture" while performing mid-air in a dramatic, self-embroidered bustier worn over an elongated sheer skirt which lent more drama to the show.
Introducing Lucknowi Chikankari for draped demi-couture dresses along with a vibrant yellow, known traditionally as Basanti, Gaurav included sun-kissed Banarasi brocades for deconstructed lehengas.
The show divided into colours, started with pale blue then moved to midnight black, then fiery rose, soothing ivory and then to gorgeous brocade.
A combination of dresses, pantsuits, saree gowns, and eveningwear classics were dappled with zardosi, Chikankari and hand-woven brocades.
The embroidery was specially crafted as 3D flowers in delicate organza and soft georgette, blossomed all over the garments along with a discreet splash of crystals.
Johar was spotted donning a red blazer with black and silver detailing. This was teamed with a black shirt and matching pants. The look was both fun and edgy.
Tabu, on the other hand, looked gorgeous in an icy blue off-shoulder gown as she opened the show for the designer. The sequin and the floral detail made the outfit stand out.
Red lipstick and hair parted at the center completed the look. Gupta has completed 15 years in the industry and there couldn’t have been a better way to celebrate this feat.
