BCCI President Jagmohan Dalmiya Passes Away In Kolkata

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Jagmohan Dalmiya, who was admitted to hospital few days back after he complained of chest pain, passed away at a city hospital on Sunday evening following a massive cardiac arrest. "Mr. Dalmiya died of internal gastrointestinal bleeding and internal organ failure," hospital sources said confirming the veteran cricket administrators death. Cricket Association of Bengal sources added: "At 6 PM in the evening his condition deteriorated and shortly afterwards he suffered a massive cardiac arrest from which he could not recover." Dalmiya has not been keeping well for a while now and was not actively taking part in the day-to-day functioning of the BCCI. Dalmiya took over the reins of the BCCI for a second time in March, after a gap of 10 years, when he got a walkover in the elections. But he has been ailing since then, and his health has deteriorated further over the last few weeks. According to sources, BCCI secretary Anurag Thakur and IPL chairman Rajeev Shukla will reach here on Monday. His condition had improved on Friday after a clot in his coronary artery was cleared during an angiography at a city hospital. ALSO READ: BCCI President Jagmohan Dalmiya In Stable Condition After Surgery The ICC condoled the sudden death of BCCI president Jagmohan Dalmiya, saying "cricket has has lost a very experienced and seasoned administrator" in him. "The ICC is shocked to hear Mr. Dalmiya's passing away. He was an ICC president whose contributions to the ICC, BCCI and world cricket are meritorious. With Mr. Dalmiya's death, cricket has lost a very experienced and seasoned administrator," the ICC said in a statement to PTI. Doctors attending on 75-year-old Dalmiya had said, "he is clinically better with improvement in ECG. He is being monitored at the hospital with medication as per protocol." After an initial clinical assessment on Thursday night, Dalmiya was taken to the cath lab at BM Birla Heart Research Institute for coronary angiography. Angiography is an X-ray examination of arteries which involved release of a special dye into the coronary arteries from a catheter inserted in a blood vessel to detect any blockages. His family members had said that Dalmiya who woke up at 3 AM spoke to his family members and Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) officials who were in the hospital throughout the night. Dalmiya's body will be brought to the CAB around noon on Monday and kept there till 3 pm for people to pay their last respect. His last rites will be performed in the evening. (With Inputs From PTI)
