Easing the process of obtaining a passport, the government has informed the Parliament that the process doesn’t require birth certificate anymore as Aadhaar and PAN card can be used to establish proof of birth.

Earlier, all Passport applicants born on or after 20/1/989 had to submit their birth certificate as a mandatory provision. However, the ministry of External Affairs, in an effort to ease the process, have broadened the scope of birth proof to school leaving/Matriculation Certificate issued, PAN Card, Aadhaar Card/E-Aadhaar, driving license, Voter ID cards and even LIC policy bonds.

The Minister of State for External Affairs V.K. Singh had already scraped the mandatory provision of birth certificate back in December. He had specified that the date of birth is no longer mandatory for getting passport and documents such as PAN card, driving licence, Aadhaar card, or Matriculation Certificate will suffice.
