A 21-year-old journalism student in Bhopal who had in February accused Congress MLA Hemant Katare of abduction, rape and blackmail filed an affidavit in High Court on Thursday stating that her FIRs against him were 'fake' and filed at the behest of BJP leader Arvind Bhadoriya.

Bhadoriya denied the claims made by the girl and called it a conspiracy against him.

“They are false and unfounded... I am prepared for a probe by any agency... It is a conspiracy against me. It was Katare who accused the girl of blackmail and she was arrested. They were together at Jabalpur today. What does it show?” Bhadoriya said to Times of India.

“The court will decide what to make of what she said earlier and now,” he added.

In the affidavit, the woman said that when she was lodged in Bhopal Central Jail after being arrested on extortion charges against Bhadoriya, her co-accused Vikramjeet and two others visited her on January 27, 2018. She claims that Vikramjeet told her he had met with Bhadoriya and said told her that she would have to file rape charges against Hemant Katare but she refused.

“After that I was harassed in prison and the lawyer persuaded me to do as directed… Or I’d have to remain in jail for three months. After days of harassment, I agreed,” she said.

The woman had been arrested for allegedly extorting Rs 5 lakh from Congress MLA Hemant Katare in January 2017. She had reportedly threatened to frame Katare in a false rape case and had demanded Rs 2 crore, after she asked him to invest in various projects which he had declined. She later agreed to settle for Rs 25 lakh and had come to collect the first instalment of Rs 5 lakh when she was trapped and nabbed by the crime branch on January 25, 2017.

Katare had defeated the BJP candidate Bhadoriya in the Madhya Pradesh assembly bypoll for the Ater seat last year.
