The clashes in West Bengal's Asansol continued even 5 days after the violence erupted due to the Ram Navami processions in Raniganj on March 25, with the total state-wide death toll reaching 5.

Amidst the violence, the Asansol constituency's MP Babul Supriyo attempted to visit the strained district on Thursday but was stopped from entering resulting in a scuffle between the former playback singer Supriyo and police forces.

“As the local MP, it is my responsibility to stand by the people who are in trouble, but the police, without any reason, stopped me from meeting them,” said Supriyo.

Supriyo was booked by the police for violating prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CrPC and under Sections 146, 147, 148 (rioting) and 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), a non-bailable offence.

In response, Supriyo lodged a counter FIR against IPS officer Rupesh Kumar at the Asansol South police station, alleging Kumar of assaulting him.

Supriyo accused “Rupesh Kumar (IPS) of West Bengal Police… for assaulting me and hitting me with his helmet, despite warning him several times not to touch me.”

The lawyer of Supriyo seconded that the minister was free to move in his own constituency and that he had not been informed of Section 144 being put into effect in the area.
