Venkaiah Naidu, Gopalkrishna Gandhi File Nominations, Officially In The Race For VP

As Tuesday marks the last date of submission of nominations for the Vice Presidential elections, the NDA candidate for the post, BJP leader Venkaiah Naidu and the Opposition's nominee Gopalkrishna Gandhi filed their nominations on Tuesday.

The selection of Venkaiah Naidu as the NDA candidate for the post of Vice President was announced on Monday evening. Soon after being selected, Naidu resigned from his post of Minister with the Narendra Modi-led NDA government where he held the portfolios of Information and Broadcasting, and Housing and Urban Affairs.

The Opposition had announced their candidate for the Vice President post, Gopalkrishna Gandhi on July 11. Grandson of the great Mahatma Gandhi, former West Bengal governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi was elected unanimously at the Opposition parties meeting.

While the Opposition had announced their candidate for Vice President before the NDA's announcement, the NDA had selected their Presidential candidate, Ram Nath Kovind, before the Opposition finalised Meira Kumar.

The election for the post of President of India took place on Monday and witnessed a voter turn-out of nearly 99 percent. Ram Nath Kovind, backed by the ruling government, several allied parties and selected regional parties, is predicted to win the election.

The Vice President elections are to take place on August 5.
