The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Monday won a crucial Delhi bypoll. This significant win of AAP's Ram Chander in Delhi's Bawana has given Arvind Kejriwal's party a much-needed psychological boost.
Bawana is one of the Capital's largest constituencies in terms of the number of electors, but the August 23 bypoll but saw only a meagre turnout of 45 per cent. AAP candidate Ram Chander won by a staggering margin of 24,052 votes getting 59,886 votes in total while BJP led candidate Ved Prakash only got 31,919 votes.
There was mainly a three-way tussle in the Bawana constituency, with the ruling AAP, BJP and the Congress all thriving to win.
The BJP-backed candidate Ved Prakash had won from the constituency in the 2015 elections as an AAP candidate. Prakash had quit the Assembly to join the BJP and this was the reason behind the bypoll being held in Bawana constituency.
State BJP president Manoj Tiwari took responsibility for the defeat. This loss also brings the BJP's ambitious plan to sweep 360 seats in 2020 General Elections in question. With the BJP's loss in Rajouri Garden bypoll back in April, the party's footprints in Delhi seems to be fading.
On the other hand, AAP, with this significant win in the bypoll, has managed to regain trust to a certain extent.
