The BJP and the opposition have both turned their cards on the table in the Presidential election. However, there is something we are missing in the midst of the Presidential elections.
The Vice-President of India, Hamid Ansari is also completing his second term in the office coming August. The election commission has announced that the Vice-President’s election will be held on August 5, five days before the incumbent’s term concludes. An election has been scheduled for his position, but unlike the President, the Vice President is only elected by the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha members.
Although none of the parties have yet announced their candidates for the position of Vice President, there have been some buzzes around the topic. Here are some of the names in discussions for the Vice-President’s candidacy.
Murli Manohar Joshi
Murli Manohar Josh is one of the most senior leaders in the BJP government. He has held the position of National President of the Bharatiya Janata Party. He has also held the position of Union Minister of Human Resources Development and Ministry of Science and Technology. He is also well known for his pro-Hindu views that bide well with the BJP.
Sushma Swaraj, the current Minister of External Affairs has a virtuous image among the public. As well as she jells with the Modi government, she is also quite popular on social media. With her active hold on twitter, she has managed to become one of most lovable personalities in the government. She would also be keen to hold the titular position given her recent Kidney transplant.
M Venkaiah Naidu
Venkaiah Naidu is the current Minister of Information and Broadcasting. A former ABVP (Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad) leader, Naidu has a strong support in both BJP and RSS. He is one of the major leaders in the Modi government and a key element in the administration.
Zameer Uddin Shah
Zameer Uddin Shah is a former Indian Army officer. A St Joseph Alumni, he has served as the Deputy Chief of Army Staff. Given the recent patriotic wave in the country in the BJP led leadership, a former veteran like Shah would not be the worst choice for BJP.
