A day after godman Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh was sentenced to 20 years in jail after being convicted in two rape cases, another self-styled godman Rampal, has been acquitted in two criminal cases by the Hisar court.

Rampal will remain in jail as other cases are still pending against him.

A case against Rampal and his followers was registered on November 17, 2014 under the IPC sections 186 (Obstructing public servant in discharge of his public function), 332 (Voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty) and 353 (Assault or use of criminal force to deter a public servant from discharging his duty).

In 2014, when Rampal failed to appear in court 43 times in connection with the case against him, he was arrested. The arrest, however, did not go peacefully.

As Police forces attempted to arrest Rampal, nearly 15,000 of his followers at the Satlok Ashram in Barwala, Hisar formed a protective ring around him resulting in a standoff between Rampal's followers and the police. A subsequent 'siege' was laid and after a two-week standoff, Rampal was finally arrested. The clashes leading up to his arrest resulted in the death of 6 people, an injury to more than 200.

The 67-year-old Rampal is accused of conspiracy in a murder case where his supporters had opened fire on villagers in Rohtak, killing one person and injuring several others.
