Any decrease in the amount of a product leads to a rise in price, and correspondingly draws the eye of thieves. The same situation has happened in Indore over the tomatoes.

Due to reduced tomato supplies, the prices have skyrocketed which has led to the theft of tomatoes in large numbers in Indore's vegetable market. Whole sale vegetable sellers in Indore have now taken steps to safeguard the expensive vegetable, by deploying security guards near their vegetable stalls.

As the price of tomatoes varies between Rs 100-120 per kg across the nation, thieves have been reported elsewhere as well.

In the vegetable market in Mumbai's Dahisar area, approximately 300 kilograms of tomatoes were stolen earlier this week, worth a total of Rs 70,000.

The police have registered a case in the matter and have also launched an investigation to nab the tomato thieves.

The price of tomatoes increased due to crop damage in producing states with the price rise visible since the end of June all over North India. Earlier, tomatoes were being sold for as low as Rs 30-40 per kg which rose to Rs 70-80 per kg in early July.

According to reports, improved production is expected to bring down the prices of tomatoes from mid-August and September.
